 The Green Team
The Green Team was officially formed in January 2008.  Two days a week select 5th graders collect the recyclables from classrooms and offices.  The students count cans & bottles and weigh all recyclables collected.  The data is then charted and posted on The Green Team bulletin board.

9,067 pounds recycled 2008
9,379 pounds recycled 2009
So far this year...
September - 484 pounds and 258 cans & bottles
October - 741 pounds and 616 cans & bottles

NEW THIS YEAR

PWCS is now a Single Stream Recycler!  That means that mixed paper, metal and plastics can all go in the same recycling bin.  Now we can recycle even more.  Thank you Dr. Walts and staff for this wonderful opportunity.

Mrs. Burke has started recycling juice pouches, potato chip bags, candy wrappers, glue bottles and sticks, tape dispensers and tape cores. Way to go!

Operation Green Sneaks was a success!  We recycled 284 shoes.

Signal Hill was recently invited to the Superintendents Business Breakfast as a Prince William County Education Foundation Innovative Grants Recipient.  Many county employees and local business leaders commented on Signal Hill's dedicated environmental efforts.

ONE EARTH ONE CHANCE WINNERS
A Prince William County Public Schools Recycling Initiative 2009

Stefani Joosten and students Nikki James and Stephany Hernandez attended the One Earth One Chance presention to Dr. Walts and his senior staff on June 10th with team members from Bennett, Pennington, Benton, New Directions and Stonewall Jackson.

The Green Team participated in the One Earth One Chance Project.   Our Green Team collected trash from six classrooms, the library and one office.  The trash was analyzed for content and charted.  The data was compiled with our other team schools’ data.  Students from Stonewall High School came here to interview our very own Green Team to hear about our practices.

Congratulations!!!

Thank you to all our participants...

Earth Week 2009
Earth Week was a wonderful success.  We powered down, had a paperless day and watched Disney’s new School House Rock Earth Edition.  The students and staff wrote to Governor Kaine telling him how we protect the earth every day and the posters were sent to his office in Richmond.  The SCA made environmental announcements every day.  Students and staff had a very successful book swap in the library.  Students brought in newspapers from home to recycle, wore green, picked up litter and signed pledge banners to be hung in our halls.

Home Depot donated a flowering crab apple tree for our Earth Day Garden.

Wal-Mart has pledged to donate plants to our garden.
